Eight-year-old Evan stood by the sidewalk watching as Mrs. Carter opened her flower shop. He felt relieved that the shop hadn’t closed forever. Two days ago, when he passed by, there was a closed sign on the door and a note saying Mrs. Carter was sick. Evan was worried that he would never be able to get his “dream job” if the shop remained closed for too long.
Mrs. Carter, an 85-year-old woman, spotted Evan looking in her shop’s direction and waved hello to him. Excitedly, Evan ran up to her and expressed his desire to work at the shop. Mrs.Carter laughed quietly, finding it amusing that an eight-year-old wanted a job. Evan confidently explained that since his dad passed away, he had learned how to do various tasks, like taking out the rubbish, making sandwiches, and assisting his mom, Stacey, with groceries. He didn’t want any payment for his work; instead, he simply wanted a bouquet (花束) for his mom’ s upcoming birthday. He believed in working hard for what he wanted, just as his mom had taught him.
Impressed by Evan’s determination, Mrs. Carter agreed to hire him. She asked if he knew how to tie ribbons around flowers, and when she heard Evan’s affirmative(肯定的) response, they got down to making bouquets. Evan was excited to assist Mrs. Carter every evening for a whole week, and his presence brought joy to her boring work.Customers found Evan adorable and entertaining, which resulted in increased flower purchases and booming business for Mrs. Carter.
On Evan’s last day, Mrs.Carter felt emotional. Their bond had grown strong, and she saw him as a grandchild. As she prepared a splendid bouquet for Evan’s mother, tears welled up in her eyes. She invited him to visit her shop in the future, and Evan promised to tell his mom about her.

With the bouquet in hand, Evan rushed home to celebrate Mom’s birthday.
As Evan handed his mom the bouquet, they were surprised to discover an envelope with several hundred-dollar bills inside.
With the bouquet in hand, Evan rushed home to celebrate Mom’s birthday. On seeing the gift, his mom was astonished. The bouquet was huge and looked expensive. Rather than being happy about it, she wondered where Evan had gotten it. “Evan? Where did you get the money for this?” she asked, worried. With a big smile on his face, Evan told her the whole story and explained that he had once overheard Stacey’s conversations, learning she didn’t buy herself things to save money for him, so he made up his mind to give Mom a special gift for her birthday. Hearing the heartfelt words, mom was moved. She embraced him tightly, expressing her love and gratitude.
As Evan handed his mom the bouquet, they were surprised to discover an envelope with several hundred-dollar bills inside. Worried that Mrs. Carter had made a mistake, Evan suggested returning the money. They went to the flower shop immediately and handed the envelope back to Mrs. Carter. Smiling warmly, Mrs. Carter explained that it wasn’t a mistake but a birthday gift for Evan’s mother. She insisted they keep it, saying it was Evan’s affection for his mom that touched her and that she decided to lend a hand. Moved by Mrs. Carter’s kindness, mom invited her for dinner that night and they celebrated Stacey’s birthday together.

A few days before Christmas, a friend called me to see if I wanted to grab a coffee. I agreed immediately. Two coffees later, I was talking when I noticed my friend wasn’t listening. She was clearly distracted by something over my shoulder. Turning around, I noticed a woman trying to get her bank card to work.
“Do you know her?” I asked my friend.
“I do. Give me a minute. I’m going to go and see if I can help,” she replied, stood up and walked over to her. A few minutes later, my friend returned with the woman. The woman looked pale, tired, and upset. Her eyes were swollen, as if she’d been crying all night. After I was introduced, my friend asked her if she was okay. She admitted she wasn’t and burst into tears.
I could sense she was a little embarrassed by her emotional response. To put her at ease, I quickly told her not to worry. I shared that I was a new mom with many troubles and I’d already cried fourteen times that day. She laughed but soon her tears were flowing again.
For the next hour, my friend and I both sat and patiently listened to her. She lost her husband before Christmas and their bank accounts were now left nothing. As a stay-at-home mom of two, in one split second, her entire life had come crashing down around her.
We tried our best to cheer her up. My friend even tried to give her some cash, which she refused. When she finally got up to leave, she wiped her tears, thanked us both for listening, and walked out.
As I drove home, I couldn’t stop thinking about how depressed she looked when she left the coffee shop. No one deserved to feel so sad especially right before Christmas. There must be something I could do to help. My mind raced for a solution.

Gladly, an idea occurred to me. I decided to buy her family a few gifts to make Christmas a little better for them. I knew it wouldn’t solve their problems, but it could relieve their pain for at least a day. On arriving home, I called my friend with excitement and explained my plan. She agreed immediately. On Christmas Eve morning, we drove to the woman’s house and sent a large box of food and a few gifts to her children, all addressed from Santa.
The kids were overjoyed and excited when hearing that Santa sent them gifts. However, their mom seemed embarrassed to receive charity and refused the presents at first. We insisted that Christmas was a time for shared joy and Santa didn’t accept returns. Eventually, the mom accepted our kindness with tears of gratitude and joy rolling down her cheeks. From that day on, I understood the power of kindness and never missed an opportunity to spread some around. I may not change the entire world with these small acts of kindness, but they can easily change someone’s world when done from heart

She was the prettiest puppy we had ever seen, and the whole family immediately fell in love with her. (第一句点名了本文的主要写作对象,是一只我们全家都非常喜爱的小狗)We named her Onyxbecause of her thick, shiny black coat. (指出小狗的名字Onyx,在阅读时要注意标画)She spent her first vacation with us when she was only ten weeks old and had her first bath and swim in the St. Lawrence River.(指出故事主要围绕游泳进行) We had no clue that this amazing little ball of fur would end up being our hero.
As she grew older, Onyx became more and more involved in our family activities. On hot summer days, Onyx enjoyed floating on the river with us in her own rubber tube (橡皮圈).(这里应该是指游泳圈) Amazingly standing on the top of the tube, she smiled while showing off her perfect balance. (小狗Onyx展示着她完美的平衡,可以看出小狗擅长平衡和游泳,为下文做铺垫)Resting her front legs and paws over the edge of the rubber tube, she kept her eyes shut as she floated until she'd had enough of the warm sun on her black coat.(她把前腿和爪子搁在橡皮管的边缘上,闭着眼睛漂浮着,直到温暖的阳光照在她的黑色皮毛上。
One day, our eighteen-year-old daughter, Margie,(本文的另一个人物出现,在阅读续写时要注意圈画人物,方便在续写时快速找到) announced she was going to swim across the bay. (女儿Margie要游过海湾,为下文做铺垫) No one in the family was free to go swimming with her. The unwritten rule, regardless of swimming ability, was to have a companion in the water with you, especially when swimming the width of the bay. I was not a good swimmer, so I said to Margie, “Take Onyx with you.” (我让小狗Onyx陪着女儿一起去游泳,可以推测小狗会在这次事件中帮助女儿) Having heard her name, Onyx woke up from a nap and was ready for action. Margie signed the dog to follow her. Onyx ran to the water next to her. They entered the freezing river together and swam side by side across the bay.
I watched from the bank as they reached thesandbar (沙洲) on the far shore. They rested a few minutes before diving into the water for the return trip. I felt uneasy for some reason and continued to watch the pair swim side by side.(我感到不安,为后文续写做铺垫,Margie可能为发生意外)
paragraph1: Suddenly I heard Margie calling out, “I have a cram (痉挛) in the leg!”
paragraph2: Seeing the pair approaching the riverbank, I breathed a sigh of relief.
