How to Become a Morning Person

Everyone knows that early to bed and early to rise is good for health.   36   Here are some ways you can focus on that can help you become a better morning person.

Shift your bedtime.

37   Most people should aim for at least seven hours a night—so you'll probably need to inch your bedtime forward as you transition (过渡) to a new schedule. You could fall straight into getting up at your desired time every day, knowing that you'll feel tired during the transition but will naturally start falling asleep earlier within a few weeks.

Relax before bed.

Don't watch TV or fiddle around (摆弄) with laptops right before you go to bed because they are shining light into your eyes and maybe even tricking your brain into thinking that it's earlier than it really is.   38   Try not to do anything too stimulating before bed, and instead focus on relaxing activities like taking a bath or listening to comfortable music.

  39

The secret to becoming a morning person is exposure to bright light. That's because light suppresses (抑制) melatonin, a hormone (激素) that plays an important role in circadian (昼夜) rhythm. Natural light is the best, so get outside or open your bedroom window.

Make mornings more pleasant.

Try to schedule something to look forward to in the morning so that getting up feels like less hard. Perhaps a hot cup of coffee, sipped in silence, and the daily crossword puzzle.   40

A. Lighten up.

B. Work up a sweat.

C. It's important to make sure you're getting enough sleep.

D. But many people have great difficulty in getting up early.

E. It's hard to stop surfing the internet late at night if you're a night owl.

F. Make sure the light around you is not too bright when it's close to your bedtime.

G. Knowing that something pleasant awaits can help you take that first painful step out of bed.

2.2024届东北三省四市教研联合体高考模拟(二)

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Living and studying abroad can be a rewarding and enriching experience. And living with a host family is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in its culture. However, living with a foreign family can be difficult and adjusting to it can take some effort.   36

Involve yourself in family activities. If you spend all your time in your room, it's going to be hard to feel like you belong. Getting involved in everyday activities with your host family will help you create a family bond. For example, some families like having dinner together on weekends.   37   Not only will they appreciate it but you will also feel like a part of their world.

Be patient with yourself. Keep in mind that you've just left everything you've known for years behind to start a new life. It's okay to be confused.   38   While you may know the language, some expressions and slang can be hard to grasp at first. Take it easy. Remember you will adapt but it will take some time.

Communication is key. If you are unsure about something, ask! It's normal to know few customs and habits at first.   39   Your host family will understand and help you. It's also normal not to know a lot about unspoken social rules of the country.

40   You have to understand that host families are not just providing a roof over your head. They are making significant changes to their daily routines. Thank them for their kindness, patience and understanding. Let them know how much their assistance means to you.

Remember, a grateful heart is a happy heart, and a happy heart will lead you to further success and fulfillment in your life abroad.

A. Be open and respectful.

B. Make time for those moments.

C. The language barrier can also be a struggle.

D. So instead of doing things blindly, just ask!

E. Showing your gratitude will take you a long way.

F. You may well recall the memorable moments with friends back home.

G. Here are some tips on making the most of your host family experience.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Does using an eco-friendly paper straw (吸管) give you a good feeling because you're doing something for the environment? It is said that straws made from plant-based materials, such as paper and bamboo, are often advertised as being more sustainable and eco-friendly than those made from plastic.    36

PFAS chemicals, infamous for their longevity and potential harm, can adversely affect humans, wildlife and the environment.    37    They are also linked to various health issues, including liver damage, kidney cancer and so on.

For a more in-depth analysis, a research team conducted a test.    38    They were made from five materials —paper, bamboo, glass, stainless steel and plastic, and then there searchers conducted two rounds of testing for PFAS. They found that most brands (69%) contained PFAS, with 18 different PFAS detected in total. In paper straws, PFAS was detected in 90% of the brands tested. PFAS was also detected in 80% of the brands of bamboo straws, 75% of the plastic straw brands and 40% of the glass straw brands.    39

On the whole, the PFAS concentrations (浓度) are low and, considering that most people only use straws occasionally, cause a limited risk to human health.    40    So the researchers advise consumers to use the stainless steel straws—or just avoid using straws when drinking.

A. They purchased 39 different brands of drinking straws.

B. PFAS was not detected in any of the five types of steel straws.

C. So many people choose to use straws made from plant-based materials.

D. However, the presence of PFAS in these straws means that could be discredited.

E. However, PFAS can remain in the body for many years and concentrations can build up over time.

F. The presence of PFAS in paper and bamboo straws shows they are not necessarily biodegradable.

G. They biodegrade (生物降解) very slowly over time and can persist over thousands of years in the environment.
