叶叔华，1927年6月21日出生于广东省广州市，天文学家，中国科学院院士和中国科学院上海天文台研究员。11月2日，已经95岁高龄的她在上海第四届全球顶尖科学家论坛“她”论坛上，用英文发表了将近20分钟的演讲，鼓励女性勇敢打破职业天花板，为自己的梦想奋斗！

The Speech of Ye Shuhua

on the 4th World Laureates Forum

叶叔华在第四届世界顶尖科学家论坛上的演讲

I have been here since this morning, because I joined the other discussion. But I will be happy to see, we, the woman scientists, got a very good opportunity to occupy such a big, maybe, the greatest, biggest, meeting room for our scientific women. So I enjoyed it very much. 

我今早参与了一场讨论会，所以一直在现场，看到我们女性科学家能有这么宝贵的机会来到这么大的会议现场，我很开心，这可能是我们见过的最大的会议室了，所以我特别高兴。

I don’t know what I am going to say. I just want to tell you that I was sometimes ago, maybe many years ago from now, I joined the meeting, international meeting what we called The Astronomical ｕｎｉｏｎ. On this meeting one scientist, women scientist from Europe, and she said that woman was not being very good treated on the scientific society. They suffer a lot and saying that there is a glass over the head. So, women are very hard to get to a high level for the professional position.

我不知道要说些什么，只想对大家说，之前，也许是很多年前了，有一次，我在国际天文联合会参加了一场国际性的会议，在那次会议上，一位来自欧洲的女科学家说，女性在科学界受到冷遇，遭受了许多磨难，而且面临职业的天花板，所以女性很难取得更高的职业地位。

And then, unbelievable, there is a little group of the women from South America and they smiled. They said they do not feel anything like some mistreatments between men and women, because in the country, men and women all joined in a professional position. So that if they feel very much equal and don’t saying off anything not good for women, and this is the first story I heard in our ｕｎｉｏｎ, Astronomical ｕｎｉｏｎ.

这时，令人不可思议的是，一些来自南美洲的女士们笑着说，她们并未遇到性别导致的待遇差别，因为在她们的国家，男性和女性都有机会获得相同的职业地位，所以每个人都觉得十分平等，没有人会发表对女性不好的言论，这是我在天文联合会了解到的第一个关于男女平等的故事。

And then after that, the ｕｎｉｏｎ’s saying is has to be more favor to a woman worker. So in every meeting, we have one noon time meeting for all women. And we all joined together and were telling our story. And then the astronomical society has a special favor for woman worker. 

在那之后，联合会为女性工作者提供更多便利，每次会议时专门为女性举行午餐会，所有的女性都参与其中，讲述自己的故事。由此可见，天文协会对女性尤为照顾。

Actually, in astronomy, women have more chance to get a permission and to get some special fare to a woman worker. And sometimes, I saw so many times, we had the chairman of the ｕｎｉｏｎ was a lady, not gentleman. Just recently we’ve had two lady astronomers successfully taking the chair of the association.

实际上，在天文界，女性有更多的机会得到许可和关怀，有几次，很多次，我看到联合会的主席是女性而不是男性。就在最近，我们有两位女性天文学家成功担任了协会的主席。

So, well, if you enjoy something, please come to visit the astronomy society. And you can also fight for your own society and let the society had equal opportunity for women and gentlemen all the same. It is also the first thing I would like to tell you: if you want get something, you have to fight for it. 

所以，如果你对这些感兴趣，可以来我们天文协会参观，你也可以在自己的领域奋斗，让男女都有平等的机会。我首先想告诉你们的是：如果想得到什么，就要去为之奋斗！

And certainly, it’s not like boxing, and we do not have any harm for people, but as for women, we would like to have more chance because we had been mistreated for a long, long while. It’s what I want to tell you. Actually, women have the special character to make the society more harmonious and more better.

当然，我说的这种奋斗不是拳击什么的，我们无需伤害别人，但作为女性来说，我们希望能有更多的机会，因为我们已经被压迫太久了。这就是我想说的，实际上，女性身上有一种的特质，那就是能让社会变得更和谐、更美好。

Well, we know, for a political woman, just recently, the chair of the European political society we just lost a position of a very great woman. And the name you all know that I do not have to say that. So actually if we do better and try our best, then I think the woman’s position would become more and more equal ｏｒ even higher. 

我们都知道，政界的女性，最近在欧盟，一位女性失去了政治领导地位，名字我想不说大家也知道，所以如果我们做得更好，展示我们最好的实力，那么我觉得女性的地位会跟男性一样平等，甚至能超过他们。

Certainly, we would like some time that the woman will be too strong and the men will be quite allowed with unequal for men. I don’t think it will happen, but we just want to have more equal opportunity between the two different sexes, and then the society will be more equal and will be more happier. 

我们当然希望，有一天，女性足够强大，男性可以忍受自己面临的不公，但我并不认为那样的事情会发生，我们只希望男性和女性能有同等的机会，那么这个社会将更加平等和幸福。

But actually woman has more burden for the family, because you have to take care of the very young children, ｏｒ just a baby ｏｒ something like that. And you wasted much time to keep the family going along. So being a woman worker, other scientists ｏｒ engineering is not so easy, but I am so happy to see now in our country, China, the woman position is coming better and better, I think we’d be better than all woman sisters had in Europe ｏｒ somewhere. 

可事实上，女性不得不担负起照顾小孩和婴儿的家庭重担，还有其他类似的任务，将大部分的时间浪费在维持家庭上，所以女性工作者、女科学家、女工程师十分不易，但我很开心地看到，在我的祖国——中国，女性的地位越来越好了，我觉得比欧洲或其他国家的姐妹要好很多。

How can we do that? Yes, you must show your ability. You must work hard to keep your working position and also keep a harmonic family and all the things you need to do. Maybe you need more attention to do all the things included, but it can be and it will be.

我们是如何做到的？当然，首先你得发挥自己的实力，你得努力工作维持自己的职位，同时兼顾维系家庭和谐的责任还有其他需要做的事情。或许你需要付出更多的精力才能做到以上这些，但这可以实现，并终将实现。

And so, on this meeting you have so many woman leaders. They are doing the best and very good work not only for herself, but also for all woman being. And I’m so happy to see all this. Although I do not have time to join all of you in the previous meeting, I feel here is a very harmonic, very happy news from the meeting room and I enjoyed it. I think all of us joined us like this.

所以，在这个会议上，我们看到许多女性领导者，她们把工作做到最好不仅仅是为了自己，更是为了所有的女性，看到她们所做的一切我很高兴。尽管我没有时间参与她们之前的会议，但能在会议现场了解到和谐又令人开心的消息，我很高兴，我相信大家都跟我一样为此感到高兴。

Among all the people in the room, I should say I am the oldest human being here. Do you know what my age is? Can you guess and give me your answer? Actually this year, I’m over 95 years old. Yeah. Well, the terrible, terrible number, but I hope later on maybe men and women can live longer and have more lucky lives. 

在会议现场的所有人中，我应该是年纪最大的，你们知道我今年多少岁了吗？可以猜一猜，告诉我答案。实际上我今年已经95岁了，没错，真是不小了，但是我希望不久的将来，所有人，不论男女都能更长寿，拥有更幸福的生活。

How can I keep my life? I think the most important for me, I just one person lived in this family. I just live alone in Shanghai, but keep on my daily work. And every morning I go to my office in the Observatory which is not far away and try to help something ｏｒ just doing what I want to do for interesting. 

我的生活是怎样的呢？我觉得对我来说最为关键的一点是，我独居在上海，但每天都去工作。每天早上，我都会去离我家不远的天文台办公室，看看能帮上什么忙或者做些自己感兴趣的事。

So, I keep my life go on very smoothly, because I do not have many burdens as you, many of our younger sisters. They have to take care of the young child, the baby and keep the family goes on smoothly. But I do not have this burden. ｏｒ I do not have this lucky, not just burden. So I just take care of myself is enough, so I feel I am a very lucky person and I enjoy my work, my position in Shanghai Astronomical Observatory, try to help something as I could and also put a satellite on the earth, see what happening. 

不像许多年轻的姐妹们，我不用承担家庭的重担，不用照顾孩子，维系家庭安稳，没有来自家庭的负担，也可以说我没有这份幸运承担家庭的责任，所以我的生活很安稳。因此，我照顾好自己就足够了，所以我认为自己是个非常幸运的人，我热爱自己的工作，热爱在上海天文台的职位，我会做些力所能及的工作，也会关注地球以外发生了什么。

In this morning I joined another discussion on the new energy. For new energy, we have the chance, just to tell you, the new energy has actually adopted from astronomical society. Why the star can shine for such a long time and still shining all the day and night? And they found, actually, what they’re doing is atomic exchange inside. And many people on the earth and countries join together to get new energy in this more natural way. And we almost come to the step of the door. 

今天早上，我参加了一场关于新能源的讨论。在新能源方面，我们有很好的机遇，可以说，新能源是从天文界得到启发的。为什么星星能持续散发光芒，日夜灿烂？实际上是因为星体内部的核变。世界上许多工作者、不同的国家都参与其中，希望以更自然的方式获取新能源。而且，我们已经离这个目标很近了。

Maybe 20 years ago, a project had been joined by many countries led by Europe, China and many countries comes into the joining. And unfortunately, after a few years, in some obstacle, that the project could not going on. Because in one experiment, they found you want to get more energy, you’ll pay more for that. So you lost and not gain anything. 

大概20多年前，曾经有一个项目，由欧洲牵头，中国和其他各国参与其中，但不幸的是，几年后，由于一些困难，项目终止了。原因是在一场实验中发现，如果想得到更多的能源，要付出更多的代价，也就是说失去所有最后一事无成。

And in some years the corporation almost closed. Just recently, it starts again. You know, not far from Shanghai, in Hefei, we have made a very strong group doing the same, try to help one part of this experiment. And they have a very good result sending us. Several countries join together and keep the project running smoothly. 

多年来，这个合作项目几乎停滞了，但最近又重启了。就在离上海不远的合肥，我们组建了一个强大的团队，他们在不断地探索，希望能为这个实验贡献力量，也确实给我们带来了很好的结果，几个国家也加入进来，大家团结协作，让这个项目平稳进行。

If everything goes perfectly, maybe in 20 years ｏｒ even longer, we will enjoy the new style of energy generation on the earth. This will adopt a way that haven’t doing. At night when you see the star, the sky full of the stars. How are the stars running? They have delight for many, many years. And how they get the energy?

如果一切顺利，或许20年后，或者再久一些，我们会以前所未有的方式迎来地球上的新能源时代。当你在夜晚仰望星空，看到满眼繁星，不禁会想：“星星是怎样运行的？它们已经闪耀了这么久，能量从何而来？”

And then, after all we know is a nuclear action inside and this nuclear action is very simple. On the earth, we can adopt this. So now after some fails and then it seems the project starts again. And all the same countries join together, try to get this successful within, maybe I don’t know how long it will be happen, maybe 10 years ｏｒ 20 years from now. 

现在我们知道了，是来自它们内部的核反应。核反应十分简单，地球也可以从中借鉴。经历了一些失败后，这一项目重新启动，之前的国家又开始合作，我也不知道多久后会成功，或许会在十年或二十年后。

Once we’ve got it, if we can run it perfectly. It’s just like the star in the sky, always shining. You don’t have to pay any attention about this. It is a nuclear reaction inside. It’s no harm, peaceful and last for long with a long duration. And in this way, people can get good quality energy like the sun and other stars in the sky and last for very long time.

如果一切顺利，一旦成功，地球上的能源将会像夜空中的繁星一样，永远闪烁。无需过多的关注，它内部的核反应无害、平静，而且周期持久。这样，人类将会得到和天空中太阳或星星一样的优质且长久的能源。

We hope someday, maybe I could, I hope I will still so lucky to see that will happen. But all of you, you are very young, compared to me, you are very young and very strong, certainly you can see this.

我希望自己足够幸运，能在有生之年看到这一切发生。但是，你们所有人，跟我比起来你们风华正茂，年轻健康，一定会看到那一天的到来。

As speaking of the scientific company, I am from the astronomical society in the world. This society has a very good relation and specialty care for woman astronomer. I remember that many years ago when we had a meeting, the lady from the Europe, she claimed that it is unequal between men and women. Woman scientists were very hard to get to the top level. Because of many ways you cannot get easily go to the top level. 

正如之前提到的科学组织，我来自国际天文协会，协会对女性天文学家格外关照。我记得，很多年前我们开会时，来自欧洲的一位女士诉说男女间的不平等，提到女性科学家们很难取得最高职位，由于种种原因，女性最终无法到达行业的顶层。

But when she said that, the people from the South America, they laughed, they said that, no any question in the country, because in South America, men and women altogether, they have to work for the whole family. And They said, they felt very happy doing things like that. It was a learning from them, the first time I learn from that. 

但是她说的时候，来自南美洲国家的人笑了，说他们的国家不存在这样的问题，因为在南美，男人与女人都要为家庭工作，还说他们很高兴能共同家庭努力，那是我第一次了解到相关的情况。

So the association of astronomy in the earth, they have paid good attention for the woman astronomer. At a general meeting they have arranged a special lunch time for women altogether and the chairman of the Association comes over and reports to all the women member how they take special care to the woman worker. 

此外，世界天文学协会十分关爱女性，他们在会议里专门为所有女性安排了午餐会，在此期间，协会的主席会来拜访所有女性成员，并向她们表达对女性工作者的支持与关照。

And it’s running for many years. Not even so, the Astronomy Association, we had more and more that a chairperson is woman astronomer. Just recently when we are celebrating the 100-year of the astronomical Association. Before and coming chairperson is actually woman and they work very happily and enjoy in this position. 

这个传统已经保持了很多年，不仅如此，天文学家协会还有了更多的女性领导。最近，我们在庆祝天文学家协会成立100周年纪念时，我们的主席就是一名女性。她们工作很开心而且乐在其岗。

I think maybe not all scientific association can do that, but if we fight and we show our ability, I think it will be happening, really could happen in anywhere of the world. See in Europe, just some days before the most powerful political person is a woman. Really. And people all think how we could not ask her to serve again. Certainly not, because it has already passed. 

可能不是所有的科学协会都能做到，但是如果我们为之奋斗，并展现我们的能力，我相信总有一天，世界上任何地方都能做到。比如欧洲，几天前，女性当选了政治上的最高领导人，真的，人们都在想怎样才能让她再次当选，当然不能，因为不能连任。

So, remember, woman is one of the powerful energies on the earth. Let us pay our best in science and technology and in any different areas. Woman and man can do the best and keep the family, the earth running more better and more perfect. I hope so and all of you, we all hope so. And just try our best to do that. 

所以，请记住，女性是地球上最强大的力量之一，我们一起在科技和其他领域都拼尽全力吧，男性和女性都可以做到最好，共同维护家庭，世界会越来越美好，我希望和你们所有人一起期待，竭尽全力去实现这一目标。

I hope gentlemen in this meeting room please notice women is 50% on the earth. And we have to do our best and men have to try to help all this, more equality would happen on the earth. May I, I don’t know if I talk something wrong. If I did so, please excuse me. Thank you.

希望所有现场的男士们能够意识到，女性是能够撑起半边天的，我们竭尽全力做到最好，男性最大程度提供帮助，世界将会变得更平等。我不知道自己是不是有的地方讲得不好，如果有讲得不好的地方，请多见谅，谢谢大家。
