Ramu started a business with great enthusiasm but just after a few months his business went under. Time passed but Ramu didn't start any new work. His teacher got to know about his situation and called him to his home.
The teacher asked,“Why don't you start some other work?”
Ramu replied, “I gave my everything to my business and yet it still failed.” The teacher tried to comfort him, saying“But that's life. Sometimes we get success and sometimes we don't. This doesn't mean that we stop working.”
“What's the point of doing work, when I can't be sure of success?”Ramu replied with a bit of annoyance.
The teacher took Ramu to a room and showed him a dead tomato plant. Ramu was confused and said,“It’s dead. Why are you showing it to me?”
The teacher replied,“When I sowed its seed,I did everything right for it. I watered it, fertilized it, sprayed it with pesticide(杀虫剂).I took great care of it but it still died.” He stopped for a while and then said,“Doing work is the same... No matter how hard you try, you cannot decide what happens in the end. However, you can control those things in your hands. Just do your best!”
Ramu asked,“But if there is no guarantee of success then what's the use of doing anything?”
The teacher said,“You'd better not think like that...”
“What's wrong with that... I have given so much hard work, so much money, so much time; if success is only a matter of chance, then what is the use of doing so much?” said Ramu and he was about to leave.
Just then the teacher stopped him and said,“Before you leave, I want to show you one more thing. ”

He took Ramu to another room and opened the door.
At that very moment,Ramu read the lesson of success.
范文:
He took Ramu to another room and opened the door. There was a pile of big red tomatoes lying there. Ramu asked, “Why are you showing me this?”Just then the teacher said,“These tomatoes are the result of not giving up on growing plants. Similarly, if you keep doing the right things, your chances of getting success are greatly increased. But if you give up because of one or two failures, life will reward you with nothing.”
At that very monent, Ramu read the lesson of success. He understood what he had to do now and left with a different idea. He conducted some market research and started a new business. No one could guarantee he would succeed this time but there was a chance. Like Ramu, many people make their failure as a reason for not trying further. It is true that no matter how hard we try, we cannot control the result. But it is also true that those who keep trying to get success will get it tomorrow if not today. Every failure is a step toward success.

How pleasant that day was! The temperature was fairly low, the sky was pretty clear and the wind was very gentle. Naturally, running was really good. I was running the first leg of a 20-mile race through some hills. Birds were warbling in the trees. The gentle wind was stroking my face. I felt at ease and full of energy. In spite of the fact that the race was occurring in the hills, I thought it would be wonderful.
In front of me was John, a student from Green High school. He was running with ease and at comfortable speed. Therefore, I decided to stay where he was. I didn't think it necessary to concentrate on setting my own pace, since John was such a nice pacesetter. I would run before him, immediately he consumed all of his energy.
I ran after John closely. The course extended north for 7 miles, wandered west for 2 miles, and turned south again. The race was getting increasingly challenging. When 4 miles remained to be covered, I was all but worn out. My lungs were burning and legs seemed broken.
John overtook the boy ahead of him. Obviously, they were familiar with each other, because they exchanged some words. Their brief exchange made me worried. Runners don't chat during a race unless they feel really good and John was running energetically. His steps were bouncy(弹性好的) while my springiness(轻快) was gone.
Still, I was desiring to go ahead of John. As long as he was totally tired, I would make it. We were approaching a hill, a mile from the finish line. Whatever happened on the hill would surely determine who would cross it first.
When I ran up the hill, my attention was wandering for several minutes. When I looked up, John was running away, leaving me far behind. It was hopeless to overtake John.

Suddenly, John slowed down and sat onto the ground with a sharp pain.
A reporter photographed this touching scene and posted it online.
范文:
Suddenly, John slowed down and sat onto the ground with a sharp pain. On spotting his painful look, I ran up to him as fast as a bolt of lightning. Much to my surprise, his ankle was sprained badly. In that split second, I tried to help him stand up and move forward, but he shook head to say no. In the meanwhile, he signed to me to run after the others so that I could win the first place. Suddenly, I was trapped in an instant dilemma. My strong desire to overtake John was flashing in my mind. But in an instant, I decided without hesitation to accompany him to take a rest. Then we ran slowly forward together. Although we were overtaken by others, a sense of relaxation was surging in my mind. The moment we finally crossed the finish line together, John cast a grateful look at me.
A reporter photographed this touching scene and posted it online. Immediately, such a big hit did the photo become that countless likes were flooding in. Numerous strangers sent emails to praise me, leaving me lost in thought. In fact, I was indecisively torn in the beginning, but the moment I decided to help John, I felt relaxed with birds warbling in the trees and the gentle wind stroking my face. Happily, I made the right choice and did the right thing. Surely, friendliness comes before competition.

Despite their genetic similarities, my twin sisters Lenna and Elsa were quite different. Lenna was a recognized athlete in our community. We all expected her to attain a scholarship on one field or another, but she lacked a certain edge to her reasoning. Elsa got along well with everyone who works in the library, but she had the grace (优雅) of a two-legged table. They had found few occasions to relate with one another and grew distant. Had I not lived with them, I would not have known them to be sisters.
They did, however, share a drive for success that seemed to become more successful around the same time during senior year. After a track and field season, Lenna was offered full scholarship at a reputable state university near our home, so long as she maintained a 3.0 GPA. Elsa had a more important thing to do: she was one perfect report card away from seizing the chance of making a speech at a graduation ceremony from her opponent, Chet Goodweather. At the end of the sixth Wednesday of the fourth marking period, as the sisters unfolded the printed report cards, their smiles turned to tears: Lenna was getting a“D” in science and Elsa was getting a“C”in gym class.
Lenna and Elsa came home at the same time and were surprised to find one another disappointed. As they argued with one another about who had suffered the greater misfortune, they realized that the other’s problem sounded easy to solve. Elsa barked,“ Your problem isn’t even a problem. I could pass that test easily and 1 can show you how to as well.”Lenna retorted(反驳),“Well, all you need to do to get an‘A’is to shorten your mile time to five or ten minutes. Two weeks of training with me and the coach will try to have you on the track team." The girls exchanged glances and came to a quick agreement.

Every morning for the next two weeks, Lenna woke Elsa up at 4:30 to run.
Final report cards were distributed the Monday before graduation.
范文:
Every morning for the next two weeks, Lenna woke Elsa up at 4:30 to run. At first Elsa was barely moving, and Lenna was able to review her science vocabulary while jogging alongside her, but by the end of the two weeks, Lenna actually had to sweat a bit to keep up with her. Every day after school, Elsa would drag Lenna into the library. The girls would talk excitedly as Lenna periodically caught on to a difficult concept during these marathon study sessions.
Final report cards were distributed the Monday before graduation. Lenna and Elsa agreed to meet up at the library after school to open their report cards together. Surprisingly, when Lenna unfolded her report card, she got a “B” in science class and would meet the terms of her scholarship. Elsa got an “A” in gym class. With another perfect report card in hand, she would surely edge out Chet Goodweather to become the top student in the class.
