It was an ordinary school day. I was in the fifth grade. Children like me who didn't live close enough to go home for lunch brought their paper wrapped meals and gathered under the shade of a tree.

Such lunches usually consisted of a sandwich, hard-boiled egg, cookie and a piece of fruit. If a schoolmate's sandwich or cookie appeared to be more appetizing than your own, you tried to negotiate a trade. I always tried to trade something I didn't want anyway--a mashed-bean sandwich or an overripe banana. It never occurred to me to trade a slice of Mama's Old Kentucky walnut cake for my schoolmate's offering of a boring-looking sweet cookie, even though I could see longing in the exchanger's eyes.

Sometimes Mama put two pieces of fruit in my lunch package, one to be eaten at morning recess if I was hungry. Quite often, though, I saved that piece of fruit as my bargaining piece for a sugary doughnut or fried apple pie.

Unashamedly, I always examined the looks and quality of my fruit to see which piece was better and then offered my classmate the poorer, less attractive piece. I felt no guilty of selfishness. It was just a good trading sense.

That autumn day after the lunch-bringers had eaten their food, got rid of the wrappings and walked to various parts of the playground, I wandered under the shade of a maple, watching butterflies flying lazily southward. I was still hungry and Mama had put no fruit in my lunch that day.

I saw my classmate Stella coming up a path.

Without hesitation, Stella handed me the apple.

范文:

I saw my classmate Stella coming up a path. She was returning from her home, one of the lucky ones who lived near the school. The sunshine cast on her black curly hair. She had something in each hand. When she drew closer I saw she was holding apples. She noticed my interest and asked, "Want one?” I nodded and told her I had nothing to trade. Stella held up the two apples. One was perfectly shaped, red and shiny. The other was smaller, slightly wrinkled.Without hesitation, Stella handed me one of the apples.I held it for a minute, waiting for her to realize her mistake. But when she started to eat the less attractive apple, I began to eat mine. I realized it was her nature to give away the best. When I finished the apple, overcome with admiration for Stella and shame at my own bargaining practices. Now I attempt to cross over that imaginary line in the grass to join with the Stellas of this world who always five their best.

“Hurry up, Kyle! Mom's car!" I yelled, pushing open the door of our school. I stepped into the strong wind, flying sand hitting my cheeks. “Kyle?" I yelled again. “Right behind you, Nikki! "Kyle yelled back, pulling my coat. Whew! My little brother was with me. We made it to Mom's car at last.

“Nikki, turn up the radio." The announcer reported, “High wind warning. Winds up to seventy-five miles per hour. Seek shelter inside. "I looked into the dark sky but saw nothing dangerous. Then.BLAM! Something knocked into the wind-shield(挡风玻璃),hard.

Mom hit the brakes. “Everyone OK? "“Yes! ” But I was astonished to see a big hawk (鹰) 1ying on the hood(引擎盖).“You two stay here , "she called over her shoulder, but I was already unfastening my seat belt and opening the door. And Kyle followed. The wind blew the hawk across the hood. I reached out and caught it before it fell to the ground. It was so soft, so warm. “Is it dead?” Kyle asked. A branch broke off overhead and crashed to the ground. “We've got to go!" Mom shouted, “load the hawk in the back.” Kyle and I gently picked it up, ourbacks to the wind to protect it.

We finally pulled into the garage. “It's alive! I saw the head move!" Kyle shouted excitedly, "Let's name it Stormy!" Just then, the light went out. “You two get into the house, NOW!” Mom ordered,“Stay away from windows.” “But we have to take care of Stormy!” Kyle insisted, on the edge of tears. I put a hand on his shoulder. “Stormy will be safe in the car until morning."I said, hoping it was true.

The next morning, we ran to the car without delay. Stormy was resting against the backseat. One wing was bent at an awkward angle. “Now let's get Stormy to the animal center. They know how to take care of injured hawks." Mom said.

范文:

After making the phone call, we drove our way directly to the animal center. Two people carrying a big cage came along. “I'm Bev, and this is Alfredo,” the woman said. “It's a red-tailed hawk. Injured right wing, he told Bev. “I named her Stormy,”Kyle said. Alfredo smiled and gave Kyle a thumbs up. Bev asked some questions and tapped Stormy's information into the computer. “OK, let's get Stormy inside!” They wrapped a towel around Stormy, placed her into the cage and walked to the building. Kyle and I followed close behind.“Sorry, no visitors," Bev said, “We limit human contact so wild animals have a better chance of surviving when we release them back into the wild. ”We were disappointed, but we had to do the best for Stormy. The door was closed and Stormy was gone.

Four months later , we got a phone call from the center , “We're releasing Stormy this evening. Do you want to come and watch?”“YES!”I shouted, “Where, when?”“On the side of the road where you found Stormy by six-thirty. We'll release her out in the field, but you need to watch from the road to avoid distraction.” We waited on the side of the road. They carried a cage into the field and Alfredo opened it. Stormy stuck her head out, but disappeared back inside. Five minutes passed before she jumped out. She opened and closed her wings, and took two steps forward. Finally, Stormy spread her wings wide and lifted off! She circled over us before flying higher and higher. Soon, she disappeared from sight. “You go,Stormy!”Kyle whispered, sending a thumbs up. “Fly strong and live long!” I whispered, waving goodbye.

I am a volunteer of Story Dogs. Rosie and I began our Story Dogs journey at a local elementary school in Term 2 this year.

Story Dogs is based on the successful American literacy program, Reading Education Assistance Dogs, which was built around the appealing idea of children and young adolescents reading to dogs.

Reading sessions take place in a quietarea of the school grounds, such as the library or outside the classroom. A reading session is about 20 minutes long, where each child is one-on- one with the dog team. Books are chosen to suit the student's reading level.

Jayon, a Year 2 student, is such a good boy as everyone likes. No one is perfect. Jayon, however, wanted nothing to do with reading! That made Jayon’s teachers and parents feel helpless. His wonderful teacher used all kinds of teaching methods, but none of them improved. At the same time, his parents trembled with his reading performance. Jayon struggled to stay focused, which meant he was disinterested in his school work... until he met Rosie!

When Jayon first came to read with us, I noticed a few things about his reading. For example, he would guess the words and become distracted very easily. He was unable to hold the book still, which would obviously make it difficult for him to read and he would lose interest very quickly, which meant I would have to read to him.

So I came up with a plan. I decided I would hold the book instead and point to each word and helped him to sound the words out instead of guessing. To keep him focused and still, I asked him to pat Rosie's back, which helped keep his hands busy. Rosie certainly didn’t mind a bit!

Using these methods,Jayon’s reading improved every week! He developed a beautiful bond with Rosie and she would show him so much love and affection! She knew he needed her and it was lovely to watch them together. With weeks passing by, Jayon’s enthusiasm for reading became stronger.

Jayon finally loved reading.

I was told that Jayon would receive the Growth Award at the end of year.

范文:

Jayon finally loved reading. He told me he would even read to his own dog at home. His wonderful teacher also kept me up to date with his progress in class. It was wonderful to hear that not only had his reading improved dramatically but his writing, focus and behavior had also improved! By the end of the last term of school, he had climbed 9... yes, 9 reading levels! Each week I was shocked at how much he had improved and how he would absolutely nail those big words which was once very scary!

I was told that Jayon would receive the Growth Award at the end of year. I was fortunate to be able to witness the wonderful moment when Jayon was presented with his award. And I was extremely proud that the Story Dogs program was given some credit to his achievement, alongside the hard work and patience of his teachers. It was an emotional and proud moment for his lovely family as well who were very grateful to Rosie and me! All of my students looked forward to Rosie and me visiting every week! Knowing that my beautiful Rosie and I can have such a huge impact on their future makes it all worthwhile!
