“In the end, you may lose your self-care skills,” said the doctor. I was twenty-seven and had multiple sclerosis(MS)(多发性硬化).I wanted to accept the news, but right now all I could think of was ending this office visit. I took a quick look at Tracy, my best friend, who began to cry softly. I hugged her close to share her sadness. We said goodbye hurriedly and left.
I was in the building business with my dad, who taught me all things. I spent most of my time working at building sites. I was not afraid of myself but I was afraid that I would let my family down because they count on me so much.
A few weeks later, I read an article about a man named Pat in Sports in the local paper. It was a lucky thing that had come my way. Pat was a coach at the state college, and had conquered MS with the help of a strict diet. At last, I found Pat. Pat and I met and talked for hours about diets and working out. After that, we became close friends. These eight words repeated in my brain: You can do it, Jason. Never give up!
I started a special diet and a workout plan designed for MS patients, and stuck to it. There were plenty of dark days when I had to ask Tracy to help me finish dressing, but thanks to the love and support, my recovery took shape.
Finally,I felt ready to set a goal for myself. The challenge came in the form of natural bodybuilding. I had played football in high school and college, and I was certainly no stranger to the weight room.I began working out hard with a trainer six days a week.He put me through different weight exercises. A few months later, all the hours of sweat and training brought me to a competition that included one three-minute performance.

范文:
I found myself standing on a stage in a packed hall where my family and Pat were. At the beginning, I felt a little nervous because the competition was a real challenge. Those eight words flashed through my mind again. So, I started acting intensively, and in the end, I succeeded. When I heard the news of my win, I cried with joy, watching my family and Pat in the dark as if all the painful days spent recovering and exercising had paid off.
Before we left to celebrate at a nearby restaurant, my dad came over. He looked me right in the eyes and said “I knew that! I knew you won’t let me down!” I held my dad close then and I saw Tracy was smiling at me. I had thought that I had to work hard in the building business to support my family, who couldn’t live without me, but I was wrong. Without their support, I would not have recovered from my illness and I would not have performed successfully.

Edward walked slowly past the school blacktop where his older brother, Leon, was playing basketball with his friends. Leon didn't notice Edward until he turned to shoot the ball. Leon really loved basketbal and was good at it. But Edward was another story.
Edward would beg to play with them but Leon's friends complained a lot. For some reason, in that last game, Edward's playing was worse than ever. He couldn't do anything right. He was completely unable to keep possession of the ball. He missed even the easy rebounds. His dribbling (控球)was useless, and none of his throws were anywhere near the basket. Leon had to turn his brother away.
Edward was always a genius at maths. He was so advanced that he already knew how to solve long division problems before he was taught in school. Word problems, even the complicated ones with several steps, were no problem.
One day, Leon's maths teacher pulled him aside. “You need to do better, a lot better, or you're not going to pass this class. There's a big test coming up.”
Leon's heart sank. When he got home, he talked with Edward about it. The boys agreed that over the next two weeks they intended to spend an hour each day after school working on maths problems and then an hour playing basketball.
"Here is a good one," Edward said and pointed to a word problem. “Why don't you read it?"
Leon looked at the book for several seconds. “I'm dizzy already!” he exclaimed.
“Do you know what the first step is?" asked Edward. "The first step is to stay cool and focused," Edward talked Leon through the problem. “Think about what you need to find out. Don't let the problem trick you.” Step by step, together they figured it out and got the right answer. Leon soon discovered that Edward was really good at helping him.

At first, Edward would get frustrated because he couldn't remember all the steps.Butafter attentive practice, his performance changed for the better. The next two weeks saw the twobrothers inspiring each other and making progress steadily. Edward learned how to shoot, passand rebound; Leon was able to solve more and more complicated word problems.
The morning ofthe maths test came all too soon for Leon.“Stay cool and focused!” With Edward‘s encouraging words echoing in his mind, Leon calmed down and buried himself in the questions. Eventually, he finished the paper with flying colors. The bell ringing, Leon handed in the paper, darted out of the classroom and went to Edward. He invited Edward to play basketball with him after school. At the court, Leon's friends were amazed by how much Edward had improved. They had so much fun! “That was pretty good for a maths genius," said Leon as he and Edward headed home. “Just like your maths grade! It was a pretty good grade for a basketball all-star."

“Hey! Ms. Woodall!”
It was Saturday. My daughter and I were touring a model home in a new development where she and her husband had just purchased a small plot of land. She was showing me something in the backyard-the kind of landscaping she was imaging, I think-when I heard that familiar twang(鼻音)call out my name.
I turned around. Standing in the yard was a little boy, stocky, brown-haired and dusted with a fine layer of dirt.“William!" I cried in surprise. “What are you doing here?”
“I'm helping my daddy lay sod(草皮),”he answered proudly, sticking his chest out. William's father owned a lawn sodding company.
“This is William," I told my daughter. “One of my students. He's a joy to have in class." The seven-year-old beamed, the blazing Florida sun bouncing off his round cheeks.
It was true. Little William was a delight. He adored plants and animals and playing outside during breaktime. And even though he struggled with his reading, he never once complained. There was a brightness he brought with him wherever he went.
I'd never forget the day in class when another student was having trouble understanding the lesson. “Don't worry," William told her, eyes wide and sincere.“Sometimes, second grade is really hard." He was a gentle soul, wise beyond his years.
Still,I couldn't help but worry. Despite his steadfast determination, William's grades were poor. Some days,I wondered if he'd be able to pass.
“See you Monday, Ms. Woodall!" he said, running to his father's side.My daughter and I waved, but William stayed on my mind for the rest of the weekend.
Back at school, William's grades showed no sign of improvement. Until the last few weeks of the year, when we studied the life cycle of plants, William excelled. As a class project, each child planted a sunflower seed in a container. Planting the seeds was exciting for many of the students, but most kids had little patience for the growing part and forgot to care for their sunflowers-to-be.

But unlike them, William had great entusiasm all along.
About a month into the summer vacation, I happened to drive by the school.
范文:
But unlike them, William had great enthusiasm all along. Every afternoon,he made sure that all the containers were walered. By the last week of school, the plants had been about 10 centimeters tall.Seeing that,I felt extremely amazed. In years past, few seeds successfully grew. And those that did had never got so tall. But these sunflowers were different. It was thanks to William that they could grow so tall. Later, I talked with William and we finally decided to move them to the ground behind the library and hoped for the best.
About a month into the summer vacation, I happened to drire by the school. To my greal surprise, there, behind the library, stood William's sunflowers, looking very healthy andstrong. All of them were al least 3 melers tall, with their faces toward the sun. Al that moment, I knew that there was no need for me to worry about William since a special seed had already been planted inside him. I strongly believed that one day, he would bloom and shine-just like his sunflowers.
