On a warm June evening my husband Stan and I, along with our little daughter, headed down the highway in a worn-out van (小型货车), pulling a pop-up camper behind us. It had been a long day, and we were anxious to reach our vacation destination in the Great Smoky Mountains. Just a couple more hours and we’d be in Chattanooga, where we planned to camp for the night, then head to Pigeon Forge the next morning.

Suddenly, my husband said, “You smell something?” He stared into the rear-view mirror (后视镜), confused. The tone of the question upset me. I sniffed (用鼻吸气), but didn’t smell a thing. “Smells like something’s burning,” he said. “I think we have a serious problem.” At the next rest area, Stan pulled out his tools and started to make a checkup. My daughter and I waited under a tree, where I quickly sank down with my sadness.

“It’s always something,” I complained under my breath. “Always something.” If only my husband had listened to me, we wouldn’t be in this dilemma. When the idea of a vacation first came up, I expressed deep concerns over taking such a long trip in a van with 200,000 miles under its hood (车篷). But, being the optimist that he is, my husband’s faith proved stronger than my doubts. And now, here we sat on the side of the road, a sad little bunch. So much for optimism.  Before long, Stan rounded the corner and gave the disturbing report. There was definitely an oil leak. A bad one, from all the signs, but if we drove slowly and stopped to add oil every few miles, we should make it to the next town. We would spend the night there, then look for a garage tomorrow. For what seemed like hours, we drove along the highway in silence, stopping often to add oil. As darkness gathered at the windows, a town came into view. We found a place to set up camp, and fell into bed in no time, exhausted.

注意:

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

After breakfast the next morning, Stan took the van to a garage.________

On the third day, despite my bad mood, we set out on a sightseeing trip. _______

After breakfast the next morning, Stan took the van to a garage. I waited the whole day until he came back in a rental car at dusk. From the way he dropped onto his bed in the camper van, I knew it was bad news. After a full day of waiting for a checkup, another full day was needed for repairs. The cost proved astonishing, which we began to be concerned about. It was at that moment that I felt certain that this whole trip had been a great mistake.

On the third day, despite my bad mood, we set out on a sightseeing trip. We hiked along a path to the top of a bush-covered hill. Looking down at the valley, I was totally attracted by the sight. Summer’s sun lay in golden ribbons along the grass. Off in the distance, a crowd of children jumped among the shadows, their laughter rising and falling. The air was alive with the smells and sounds of summer. Suddenly I realized that no matter where the road may take me, I would not let the unexpected destroy the day.
