On July 2, 2023, Zhang Jinyuan, 94, received the Inter-national Achievement Award at the International Council l of Nurses Congress held in Canada. It is the first time that a Chinese nurse has


won the famous prize. However, it was not the first time that Zhang had been praised by the medical community.In 2003, Zhang was given the Florence Nightingale Medal.


Born in 1929 into a wealthy family in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, Zhang once led a rich life. By chance, she read about Florence Nightingale, who spent all her life on her beloved nursing work. Zhang then made the decision to leave her comfortable life behind for a job as a nurse.


In 1951, she began her decades-long work as a nurse. Even after her retirement(退休)in 1992,Zhang didn't stop thinking of those in need of care.


In 1999, she called upon her friends to help her set up a volunteer nursing service center in Jiangxi. It was named the Jiangxi Red Cross volunteer nursing service center in 2002. It provides care services in the communities for people in need of medical aid.


In 2010, Zhang started a volunteer group named after Nightingale in Nanchang, and four years later she built another volunteer group named after herself. Today, nearly 20,000 volunteers provide free care services under Zhang's guidance(指导).


Zhang's family supports the difficult and time-consuming(费时的)job she has chosen. “My grandma doesn't know how to cook or do housework at all.But she has put her whole heart into the work of helping others. She is my hero,"said Yu Qing, Zhang's granddaughter,who works at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.


Yu has chosen to focus her research on music therapy(疗法).This is the very same purpose as her grandmother:to help more people.
